Chapter 20
Pip is taken to London by Jaggers, at the same time Pip is amazed and displeased with the stench London is giving off. Jaggers is seen as a very important and powerful man, due to the number of criminals outside of his office, we understand that he is relieving some of their crimes by getting them to pay him money.
Chapter 21
Wemmick introduces Pip to Herbert Pocket the son of Matthew Pocket. The two will spend the night. They then realise that they have met before, whilst Pip has had his fortune made for him, Herbert is hoping to become a merchant. Pip starts to realise that Herbert is the “pale young gentleman” he fought a while back.
Chapter 22
Pip wants to learn how to become a gentleman from Herbert, so he can win Estella’s heart. At the table Herbert starts to correct Pip’s poor manners at the table, he proceeds to give Pip are more Gentleman name “Handel”. The story of Miss Havisham is then told to the reader by Herbert, we find out that Miss Havisham was born into a rich family and she had a half brother. Once Miss Havisham’s father died Miss Havisham owned most of the Brewery and kept on lending her half brother money frequently. We later find out that Miss Havisham fell in love wit a man of lower class, her love for him consumed her, the two were set to get married but instead of turning up at the alter he leaves a note which Miss Havisham sees at “8:40”, hence all the clocks being stopped at that time. Herbert then informs Mr Pip that the reason why Miss Havisham’s fiancé left her was to transfer all the money Miss Havisham was giving to him to her half brother “Has been supposed that the man to whom she gave her misplaced confidence, acted throughout in concert with her half-brother; that it was a conspiracy between them; and that they shared the profits.” This quote supports the fact that Her supposed to be husband was working with her half brother in order to get money out of Miss Havisham. Pip then visits Matthew Pockets house to where he meets Mrs. Pocket, Flopson and MIllers.
Chapter 23
Pip then visits Mr Pocket’s house to where he is going to be tutored and have dinner. we find out that Mrs. Pocket’s dad was a knight and he protected her from ever having to do anything in life. We learn more of this when her two nurses Flopson and Miller give her her baby to hold and she immediately drops the baby on its head, this enforces the fact that she has no skill in anything other than reading.”Mrs. Pocket took it the other way, and got its head upon the table; which was announced to all present by a prodigious concussion.” Pip is then introduced to his fellow students Bentley Drummle and Startop.
Chapter 24
Pip arrives in Jaggers office in order to arrange rooms so he can share it with Herbert Pocket. Whilst at Jaggers office Pip befriends Wemmick, who then proceeds to invite Pip to dinner later on. Pip also views Jaggers true self in court and is generally amazed by how good Jaggers is at defending cases.
chapter 25
Pip gets to know the Pockets much better, he then attends Wemmicks dinner as he was told to. On his way to dinner Pip is alerted to the design of Wemmicks house. It is a castle, and Pip is generally amazed with both the design of the house and how Wemmick behaves in his workplace compared to in his house.”Proceeding into the Castle again” this quote enforces the fact that Wemmick’s house is built as a castle.
Chapter 26
Pip walks into Jaggers office and him and his friends are invited to dinner at Jaggers house later that day. Upon visit Pip realised that Jaggers lived in a very dark and oppressive house “Rather a stately house of its kind, but dolefully in want of painting, and with dirty windows.” This quote once again tells us the reader that Jaggers lives in a dark house with dirty windows. At diner the four talk amongst each other and talk about a loan Bentley Drummle borrowed from Startop. Due to this Jaggers proceeds to tell Pipo to stay away from Drummle.
Chapter 27
The chapter begins with a letter from Joe telling Pip that him and Mr Wopsle are visiting London in the coming days and would request his decision if they are able to see him “I write this by request of Mr. Gargery, for to let you know that he is going to London in company with Mr. Wopsle and would be glad if agreeable to be allowed to see you.” Pip finds the visit very awkward and the quote “Not with pleasure” sums up Pip’s reaction to receiving that letter. Upon meeting each other the two have a formal conversation about how things are going in their separate lives, Pip seems to be annoyed with Joe until he informs Pip that Estella is back. Pip then proceeds to regret the way he portrayed himself to Joe and wants to apologies but Joe leaves before Pip could.
Chapter 28
Pip feels that there is a need to go back in town in order to apologise to Joe and to see Estella who he hasn’t seen in a long time. In order to get there Pip must take a coach and share it with convicts who are on the same coach. One of the convicts is said to be the stranger that gave Pip and his family money, but the convict doesn’t recognise Pip “The very first words I heard them interchange as I became conscious were the words of my own thought, “Two One Pound notes.” this quotation enforces the fact that Pip knows that this convict is the stranger but also enforces the fact that the convict doesn’t recognise Pip. “I should assuredly have got down and been left in the solitude and darkness of the highway” this quote suggests to us that Pip left the coach in a hurry as he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The chapter ends with Pip narrating the story and telling us the reader that upon discovery he has found out that Pumblechoock has taken credit for Pip’s rise in fortunes “Pumblechook was my earliest patron and the founder of my fortunes.”
Chapter 29
Pip finds it to early to visit Miss Havisham so instead he goes into town on Miss Havisham’s side not Joe’s. Pip then makes his way towards Statis house and is startled when he finds Orlick there. He then proceeds to enter Miss Havsiham’s, where he sees Estella who is more beautiful than ever. With this discovery Miss Havisham urges Pip to love Estella even more. Jaggers is also there and they proceed to have dinner with Jaggers.
