Pip tells Jaggers that he feels like Orlick isn’t the right man to fill Miss Havisham’s post and mentions Orlick’s past in the process of doing so. As a consequence Jaggers fires Orlick. Pip returns back to London, where Herbert goes on about him gaining capital, Herbert also tells Pip that he too loves someone. We find out that he loves Clara and wants to marry but is too poor to afford it. the chapter ends with Pip blowing out the candles and go to Denmark in quest of Mr. Wopsle

Chapter 31

Pip arrives in Denmark and watches a poor play of Hamlet and then proceeds to meet up with Wopsle in aims of cheering him up over dinner.

Chapter 32

Pip receives a note from Estella ordering him to go to London train station. Due to it being Pip he goes very early and suddenly encounters Wemmick, who takes Pip on a tour of the revolting Newgate prison.  Mr Wemmick then proceeds to introduce Pip to a convict who is set to be executed through hanging.

Chapter 33

Pip describes Estella as being more beautiful as ever, this quote enforces that “Estella seemed more delicately beautiful than she had ever seemed yet.” Pip still cant remember who Estella’s face reminds him of. Estella still mocks Pip by calling him a silly boy in a sarcastic manner “You silly boy.”

Pip and Estella carry on talking, until Estella tells him that he is to take her to Richmond, so Pip does what he is told. In the end Pip returns back home to the Pockets home.

Chapter 34

Pip has begun accustomed with his expectations. Pip regrets the poor treatment he has given to Joe and Biddy, and starts to feel homesick, ” there was no fire like the forge fire and the kitchen fire at home.” Herbert Pocket and Pip count up their debts, Pip owes a lot more money than Herbert does. a turn of bad news hits Pip when he finds out his ill sister has passed away. Pip is requested to attend the funeral.

Chapter 35

Pip makes note that this is the first “grave” that has opened up in his life, Pip feels very sad at this given moment and regrets many things. Pip then talks with Joe and Biddy, a greeting with Joe but a conversation with Biddy, to which she asks Pip why he doesn’t visit more often. Pip says his goodbyes and leaves the next morning for London.

Chapter 36

Pip celebrates his twenty-first birthday, meaning he wont have to receive money through Jaggers, he can now receive it from his fortune. However Herbert and Pip’s debts are increasing and getting bigger. Pip hopes Jaggers will reveal to him who his benefactor is, but instead of doing so Jaggers tells him to “waive” that thought, he then proceeds to hand Pip a bank note five hundred pounds. Unfortunately Pip is in seven hundred pounds in debt so this money wouldn’t be enough to clear his debts. Pip tells Wemmick that he would like to support Herbert’s business and act as a benefactor for Herbert, Wemmick strongly disagrees and tells Pip it is more enjoyable if you toss your money over a bridge than waste it on Herbert.”and take a walk upon your bridge, and pitch your money into the Thames over the centre arch of your bridge, and you know the end of it. Serve a friend with it, and you may know the end of it too – but it’s a less pleasant and profitable end.” this quote enforces the fact that Wemmick disapproves of Pip’s plans.

Chapter 37

Pip visits Wemmick’s house, where he is greeted by his aged father. The two endure in a conversation, but are interrupted by a Miss Skiffins whom we later find out is Wemmick’s girlfriend(she is described as having a wooden appearance). Wemmick finally arrives back home and decides to agree with Pip’s plans and decides to help Pip support Herbert. Wemmick then raises the flag and fires from his cannons. They then proceed to have dinner where Wemmick on several occasions attempts to place his hand on Miss Skiffins.

Chapter 38

Pip begins to spend a lot of time with Estella at her hostesses’ house, whose name is Ms Bradley and has a daughter several years older than Estella. Estella treats her suitors in a way the reader would think she would treat them. The two then visit Satis house where they find Miss Havisham in a room. Miss Havisham hold Estella but she begins to detach herself from Miss Havsiham causing an argument between the two. Miss Havsiham argue with Estella about love and how she hasn’t taught Estella how to love someone and has caused her to be  very cruel and cold hearted. Pip then lays rest at Satis house and is “haunted” by thousands of Miss Havisham’s.

Pip and Estella return to London. We learn more about Bentley Drummle we find out that he was raised very different to Pip, and he too receives money through Jaggers. Pip is satartled when he realises Drummle knows Estella. Drummle reveals that Estella likes him and even brings a written vowel as proof, this angers Pip, but the way in which Estella treats Drummle  through despising him calms Pip down, as he is told by Estella that she despises everyone but Pip.

Chapter 21

Wemmick introduces Pip to Herbert Pocket the son of Matthew Pocket. The two will spend the night. They then realise that they have met before, whilst Pip has had his fortune made for him, Herbert is hoping to become a merchant. Pip starts to realise that Herbert is the “pale young gentleman” he fought a while back.

Chapter 22

Pip wants to learn how to become a gentleman from Herbert, so he can win Estella’s heart. At the table Herbert starts to correct Pip’s poor manners at the table, he proceeds to give Pip  are more Gentleman name “Handel”. The story of Miss Havisham is then told to the reader by Herbert, we find out that Miss Havisham was born into a rich family and she had a half brother. Once Miss Havisham’s  father died Miss Havisham owned most of the Brewery and kept on lending her half brother money frequently. We later find out that Miss Havisham fell in love wit a man of lower class, her love for him consumed her, the two were set to get married  but instead of turning up at the alter he leaves a note which Miss Havisham sees at “8:40”, hence all the clocks being stopped at that time. Herbert then informs Mr Pip that  the reason why Miss Havisham’s fiancé left her was to transfer all the money Miss Havisham was giving to him to her half brother “Has been supposed that the man to whom she gave her misplaced confidence, acted throughout in concert with her half-brother; that it was a conspiracy between them; and that they shared the profits.” This quote supports the fact that Her supposed to be husband was working with her half brother in order to get money out of Miss Havisham. Pip then visits Matthew Pockets house to where he meets Mrs. Pocket, Flopson and MIllers.

Chapter 23

Pip then visits Mr Pocket’s house to where he is going to be tutored and have dinner. we find out that Mrs. Pocket’s dad was a knight and he protected her from ever having to do anything in life. We learn more of this when her two nurses Flopson and Miller give her her baby to hold and she immediately drops the baby on its head, this enforces the fact that she has no skill in anything other than reading.”Mrs. Pocket took it the other way, and got its head upon the table; which was announced to all present by a prodigious concussion.” Pip is then introduced to his fellow students Bentley Drummle and Startop.

Chapter 24

Pip arrives in Jaggers office in order to arrange rooms so he can share it with Herbert Pocket. Whilst at Jaggers office Pip befriends Wemmick, who then proceeds to invite Pip to dinner later on. Pip also views Jaggers true self in court and is generally amazed by how  good Jaggers is at defending cases.

chapter 25

Pip gets to know the Pockets much better, he then attends  Wemmicks dinner as he was told to. On his way to dinner Pip is alerted to the design of Wemmicks house. It is a castle, and Pip is generally amazed with both the design of the house and how Wemmick behaves in his workplace compared to in his house.”Proceeding into the Castle again” this quote enforces the fact that Wemmick’s house is built as a castle.

Chapter 26

Pip walks into Jaggers office and him and his friends are invited to dinner at Jaggers house later that day. Upon visit Pip realised that Jaggers lived in a very dark and oppressive house “Rather a stately house of its kind, but dolefully in want of painting, and with dirty windows.” This quote once again tells us the reader that Jaggers lives in a dark house with dirty windows. At diner the four talk amongst each other and talk about a loan Bentley Drummle borrowed from Startop. Due to this Jaggers proceeds to tell Pipo to stay away from Drummle.

Chapter 27

The chapter begins with a letter from Joe telling Pip that him and Mr Wopsle are visiting London in the coming days and would request his decision if they are able to see him “I write this by request of Mr. Gargery, for to let you know that he is going to London in company with Mr. Wopsle and would be glad if agreeable to be allowed to see you.” Pip finds the visit very awkward and the quote “Not with pleasure” sums up Pip’s reaction to receiving that letter. Upon meeting each other the two have a formal conversation about how things are going in their separate lives, Pip seems to be annoyed with Joe until he informs Pip that Estella is back. Pip then proceeds to regret the way he portrayed himself to Joe and wants to apologies but Joe leaves before Pip could.

Chapter 28

Pip feels that there is a need to go back in town in order to apologise to Joe and to see Estella who he hasn’t seen in a long time. In order to get there Pip must take a coach and share it with convicts who are on the same coach. One of the convicts is said to be the stranger that gave Pip and his family money, but the convict doesn’t recognise Pip  “The very first words I heard them interchange as I became conscious were the words of my own thought, “Two One Pound notes.” this quotation enforces the fact that Pip knows that this convict is the stranger but also enforces the fact that the convict doesn’t recognise Pip. “I should assuredly have got down and been left in the solitude and darkness of the highway” this quote suggests to us that Pip left the coach in a hurry as he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The chapter ends with Pip narrating the story and telling us the reader that upon discovery he has found out that Pumblechoock has taken credit for Pip’s rise in fortunes “Pumblechook was my earliest patron and the founder of my fortunes.”

Chapter 29

Pip finds it to early to visit Miss Havisham so instead he goes into town on Miss Havisham’s side not Joe’s. Pip then makes his way towards Statis house and is startled when he finds Orlick there. He then proceeds to enter Miss Havsiham’s, where he sees Estella who is more beautiful than ever. With this discovery Miss Havisham urges Pip to love Estella even more. Jaggers is also there and they proceed to have dinner with Jaggers.
