spoken language analysis

Arbies Ight, what position are you in the league?                                                                       green= Idiom

Al right, what position are you in the league?                                                                    blue= Repetition

One of the reasons why many people shorten there words is so they can say it initially much quicker and at a faster rate they can do this to add more effect top their point. Another reason why some people may shorten words is because of brevity, in order to emphasise the short duration of the speech, this is shown when I say ight instead of saying alright, due to the speakers being roughly at the same age it is right ti use this form of language, however when talking to someone older or in more power it is often right to use standard English.

Albion: And what? And what? And what?

          What if we are?

The reason why poeple use repetitionin sentences is to emphasise a point, whenever they recieve a point that icludes facts they often repeat words to make them stand out abd bolder, they do this to show that they are the boss in the convestation. People often comeback with repetition suggesting that it doesn’t affect them in any way and it is not of such importance in their view. Another possible rerason is that because they have nothing to comeback with and intially fail to provide a factual answer they repeat what they are saying to make it look like a point. However in normal spppech repetition can be possibly used to make a point seem stronger and to give power to the speaker.

Arbies: Look at the table Look at the table

Why don’t you look at the table?

The reason why I use repetition as well as Albion is to illustrate emphasis on each of our seperate points, in my personal view i used repetition in this scenario to show how low Chelsea football club is in the Barclays Premier League table, however in albions point of view he uses repetition to show that he wasn’t worried about my point and didn’t care where chelsea were positioned iin the leauge as it is only the beginning of the season

  1. Arbies, you’ve made some very good observations here – and you’ve also supported these with detailed analysis and reference to specific quotations from the transcript. This makes this a strong analytical piece.

Now we need to start working on your fluency and confidence in written expression. Some of this has to do with the structure of your writing, and some to do with words you choose.

An example of this is where you refer to someone being the “boss” of a conversation. It would be better in formal analysis for you to use terms like “dominant participant” who “sets the agenda”

I also encourage you to watch for spelling errors (league) and apostrophe errors (Albion’s) and to make sure every name starts with a capital letter.

    Good going, though!
